Ingredients
  

For the Base
  • 1 pound ground beef lean
  • 1 medium onion diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 can diced tomatoes with juice
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
For the Potatoes
  • 4 medium potatoes peeled and sliced
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon butter for greasing
For the Topping
  • 1 cup shredded cheese cheddar or mozzarella

Method
 

Prepare the Base
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned.
  3. Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet, cooking until softened.
  4. Stir in the diced tomatoes, beef broth, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes.
Assemble the Casserole
  1. Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with butter.
  2. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the bottom of the dish.
  3. Spread the beef mixture evenly over the potatoes.
  4. Top with the remaining potato slices, then pour the heavy cream over the top.
Bake and Serve
  1. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  2. Remove the foil, sprinkle the shredded cheese on top, and bake for an additional 15 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  3. Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving.
