Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup whole milk (warm)
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup softened butter
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup dried currants (or raisins)
  • 2 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup icing sugar (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: Warm the milk and stir in sugar followed by yeast. Let it froth for about 5–10 minutes.
  2. Make the dough: In a bowl, combine flour, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and currants. Create a well in the center; add the yeast mixture, butter, and eggs. Mix until combined.
  3. Knead the dough: Transfer to a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth.
  4. First rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm area until doubled in size (about 1 hour).
  5. Shape: Punch down the dough gently and shape it into a round loaf on a parchment-lined tray. Score the top with cross shapes using a knife.
  6. Bake: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown. Brush with melted butter upon removing from the oven.
